Beginner Digital Photography Syllabus

University Settlement Beginner Digital Photography:

This course is designed for beginning photographers who want to better understand their cameras and learn the basics of photographic composition.  There will be weekly assignments for students to explore aspects of photography such as exposure, vantage point, and framing. Each week, students will need to bring in examples of their work from the assignment in either print or digital form.  

Week 1: Nov 5
Digital photography workflow. . .

Topic: still life
Technical focus: basics of exposure, aperture

Week 2: Nov 12
Topic: Color – color theory
White balance

Week 3: Nov 19
Topic: Framing
Technical focus: composition, rule of thirds, cropping

Week 4: Nov 26
Topic: Time
Technical focus: shutter speed (sports mode)

Week 5: Dec 3
Topic: Vantage Point
Technical Focus: Depth of Field


Week 6: Dec 10
Topic: Detail
Technical focus: Macro Photography


Week 7: Dec 17
Review images from Detail
Technical focus: lighting and flash
