Class Description:

This course is designed for advanced photographers who want to better understand color management both in their cameras and in Photoshop.  There will be weekly assignments for students to practice the topics covered in class. Each week students will need to bring in examples of their work from the assignment in either print or digital form.  You should also bring a notebook or folder to organize your class notes.


Week 1 (Jan 2)
Topic: Color Theory
Technical Focus: Preparing Photoshop with the correct color settings,
                             Variations Command Dialog Box
Assignment: Bring in 10 photos you have taken in the past that have problems with color or lighting,
                     Red

Week 2 (Jan 9)
Topic: Color and Lighting (single source artificial light - flash & strobes)
Technical Focus: Preparing your camera with the correct color settings
                             White Balance
Assignment: Green

Week 3 (Jan 23)
Topic: Color and Lighting 
Technical Focus: Flash settings on your camera 
Assignment: Yellow

Week 4 (Jan 30)
Topic: Color and Lighting (single source natural light)
Technical Focus: Color Balance in Photoshop, Camera Raw adjustments
Assignment: Blue

Week 5 (Feb 6)
Topic: (single source artificial light - continuous light)
Technical Focus: Color Balance in Photoshop
Assignment: Purple

Week 6 (Feb 13)
Topic: Color and Lighting (mixed light)
Technical Focus: Color Balance in Photoshop
Assignment: Orange

Week 7 (Feb 20)
Topic: Black & White
Technical Focus: Color balance in black & white
Assignment: Read “Are Black & White Colors?”

Week 8 (makeup class)
Topic: Black & White
